Titus Slides

Titus was a series at Kaleo in the book of…Titus (sometimes you just get worn out on creative series names).Titus is written by Paul to a young pastor, Titus, of a small town. This series is intesely practical. Pastor’s Bill spin was to push people to move into action. With that said, I decided to give Titus, the man, a face (well not really “a face”, more of just a body and the back of a head). Using an image with a little ambiguity helps the viewer place themselves in the concept.Enjoy.

Kaleo Kids gets a NEW Logo

Kaleo Kids at Kaleo Church, in Houston, has been a HUGE success. As they grow, their need to stand out does as well.

My challenge with any internal ministry logo is to set them apart from other ministries, but not apart from the church they exist for and in.

The inspiration for this logo actually came from Sue, the Children’s Ministry Director at Kaleo. She is one of the craftiest people I have ever met and one of the things she likes to do is sew. Knowing that, I thought why not just “sew” on a kids patch to the church logo. I thought there was a certain youthful, crafty, fun-ness (yes that is a word) to this approach and so has everyone who has seen it.

These variations and others can be used without abandoning the concept. The whale might be appropriate for a lesson or class on Jonah while the splat might work well for a Kaleo Kids Play Date.

The key is that each variation follow the same color scheme and basic pattern. All of the concepts include the Kaleo Church logo. The text for the word, “Kids,” is also shared between each design.

I also limited the color scheme on this version of the logo for a few reasons. First, to help it work on several future projects and second, to keep spot color printing costs low. The first media the logo was ever printed on was a t-shirt worn by the Kaleo Kids Staff. The previous design has six different colors…ouch. The new design has two…sweet!

Showcase This!

Every year a group of private schools and camps gathers in the Woodlands area for the annual Showcase of Private Schools and Camps.

This past year they asked me to update their identity and create a direct mail piece that would invite people to the event.

The previous logo to your left needed a bit of an update and the people who organized the Showcase wanted something that was easier to update (the year), easier to place (because the previous design had to be BIG to be legible), and something that worked with more colors.

They loved the new version.

St. Philip Lutheran gets a NEW Face!

St. Philip was a church that I was involved in during high school so I kind of have a soft spot for them.

They are a church in transition so a new identity was my first assignment. There was A LOT to pack into this logo. The church has a rich history and a very diverse congregation. They are located in a very diverse demographic area of Houston as well. They value the depth of scripture as well as the community that gathers for fellowship and doing life together.

With those things in mind, I set to work. Several concepts later, we actually ended up piecing together a few concepts to make this final design. I felt I was very specific when illustrating this logo but, usually when I present a logo for the first time, I leave the interpretation up to the viewer. The range of what people took for themselves from this logo was amazing. People see wheat, they see a person, they see a person set a flame for the gospel, they see a cross, a gift, a gift bigger than us, the list goes on.

This kind of variance, though not extremely common, is fine by me. With a congregation as diverse as St. Philip I believe you need an identity that everyone can identify with.

Loving Houston: A Church For the City Slides

Loving Houston: A Church For the City was a series at Kaleo Church in Houston covering our spheres of influence and how Kaleo can be a church that exist for the good of the city.

What better way to capture the idea of “the city” than with the city skyline. I think Houston has one of the best skylines in the country.

Hector Garcia, of Dunamis Media, was kind enough to capture the shot used in these slides from the Dunamis Media Loft. Thanks Hector!

Chasing Grace Presentation Slides

Chasing Grace was a series at Kaleo walking through the book of Ruth. Ruth is the story of a widow who serves her mother-in-law by day gleaning wheat from the field of Boaz. Of course, there is a lot more to it than that but those details inspired the design of these slides.

There is a really great trail on top of a hill here in Houston. There is this long, wheat-like grass that grows there and never gets mowed. My wife is the most beautful woman in the whole world so I figured why not take her picture for the series.

She is beautiful = the slides are beautiful

I used a new title slide almost every week just for variety sake.

Enjoy the slides.

Easter Slides

Following a similar approach from Kaleo’s Christimas gathering entitled, EXTRAORDINARY, I wanted to convey the same movement but with a whole new tone.

Easter is all about the new, rebirthed life of Christ and our new life in Him. With that said, I used nothing but organics and living, moving elements. There are a few stars and even an airplane in there somewhere but the theme of “Life” prevails over all.

I’m Not Happy Presentation Slides

“I’m Not Happy” was a series at Kaleo discussing the topic of Joy. While brainstorming this series the creative team at Kaleo and I decided it would be fun to use pictures of people who looked happy to contrast the title.

I stumbled on to a lot of 50’s and 60’s advertising and decided to use it to create the look for this series.
